The Difficulties of Writing about Jesus

So our weekend was one of those deceptive ones that seemed really relaxing, until we got into it. Suddenly we all thought of a million things we needed to do and people we needed to see, and now it’s Monday, and we’re all exhausted.

Writing my blessed and blessing Bible study took hours this past week. Which is also deceptive. Last week, a study on Lydia, didn’t take this long. I knew this week’s study would take longer because it was about acting counter to our culture, which is a deeper study.
And also, because Jesus was in this study.
Studies where Jesus, the actual Man, is walking and talking to people in the lesson, are millions of times harder for me to write than when He’s not. And I know, you’d expect the complete opposite, right? You’d expect the people who lived with Jesus to be the best ones to write. Lots of What Would Jesus Do? and Look! What Jesus Did! and You Should Too!
But it’s not like that.
Bible studies are so much easier to apply to our lives when we can relate to the people in the Bible. And it’s very hard to relate to Jesus. Or people who were with Him. There’s a certain amount of “Well, I could never do that. Sure, we should help others. But Joanna was helping JESUS. It’s completely different for me. How can I even imagine what it was like to be with JESUS? That’s not my life!” And because of that, all the usual teaching analogies break down.
So, the whole thing took so many hours to get just right. And, of course, I’m not at all sure that I got it right. But, if you want, you can click over there and tell me what you think.
Or, you can just wait until next week when we talk about the TEACHINGS of Jesus and not the actual Guy.
