Considerations of an August 29 Birthday

We didn’t listen.

Or, rather, Catie didn’t listen and chose that day as the day to enter the world.

At that time, she didn’t know about some problems with an August 29 Birthday…

…there’s the Early School Year Awkwardness. I’ve written about this before. Her birthday is five days into the new school year. She’s just meeting kids in her class, everyone is just figuring out the routine. It’s quite a bit for her new friends to deal. Birthday treats the second week of school are overwhelming for the teacher. Her friends from last year are embracing their new class and can’t be bothered with a Has-Been Friend’s Birthday.

…the heat. Like 107 degree (w/o heat index). Really limits your party choices to the pool, the beach, or sitting on blocks of ice. Or all of those.

…the hurricanes. August 29 is the day Katrina struck. Historically, it’s a popular day for hurricanes and tropical storms because it is the height of hurricane season. The warm Gulf waters and the someothermeterological condition make it the day for the perfect storm. This is only good for birthdays if this somehow involves a school dismissal.

…the characters. Like I mentioned yesterday, it’s the day Michael Jackson was born. John McCain also knows the struggles with an August 29 birthday. We’ve also met some other characters born on this day. Like when we meet someone REALLY strange, their birthday is often August 29.

…the what-grade-am-I-in? Question. I’ve written about this before. I obsess about it in real life. The school birthday cut-off in Texas in September 1, which makes Catie the YOUNGEST second-grader in her school. Oh my. I would probably have the same problem if she had that doctor’s birthday of September 1. Only then she could be one of the oldest kids in her class. Six of one….

Despite these considerations, August 29 has served our girl well.

And we couldn’t be more joyful about that day, seven years ago, when she burst into our world and changed our lives forever.
