I do love a picture that’s also a metaphor. And the faces on this bunch are priceless.

And so telling…
It was one year ago today that we told the kids I was pregnant (mostly because I couldn’t hide it anymore, thank the twins for the elastic-free skin around my belly).
And here we are, one year later, in front of that same Christmas tree. With Nate. Fully formed and in my fave Hannah Andersen pjs.
Nate plopped down in the middle of the action is the first part of this metaphor. He’s been plopped right smack dab in the middle of our lives. And handled it all with a no-nonsense, wry expression like this one.
Catie had the biggest year of her life. She started a big new school, learned to read, and did it all smiling. And with her eyes (metaphorically) closed. Sometimes she’s so innocent and wholesome she doesn’t even realize the challenges she’s conquering. Sometimes she’s also so distracted, she doesn’t fully realize she conquered them.
Ellie also had a big year. And her smile is a nice metaphor for it. I can truly say we saw not one tiny bit of sibling rivalry with Nate’s arrival. She just held him up and grinned.
Oh, and Sam. His expression in this picture makes it the metaphor photo. Yesterday he asked me, “next year will I be a baby?” The day before he asked when his name wouldn’t be Sam anymore. Nate’s arrival has really made him wonder about everything–especially aging. But he’s been happy to help out…if only he could figure out what exactly to do. Confused or not, he’s one of the sweetest kids I’ve met.
Merry Christmas!
