Sam and Ellie on June 23, 2007 (34 weeks gestational age).

It’s been a week since I’ve posted anything. But what a week it’s been.
Fathers Day, Sam’s birthday, Ellie’s birthday (those last two were the same day, but since they shared every other celebration, I thought I’d give them some individuality here), M’s birthday, and a gymnastics party to commemorate it all.
Oh, and I’m now 34 weeks pregnant. This shouldn’t be that significant. Week 34 should just be another week, smack dab between 33 and 35. Another week when six pounds of baby rests squarely on my bladder, lungs, and stomach.
I wish that week 34 could be just that. But the twins were born at 34 weeks, and somehow my hormone-riddled brain confused that to believe I would deliver this baby this week too. If that doesn’t make sense to you, you’ve either never been pregnant, never been in close proximity of a whale–I mean woman, who’s at the BEOP (bitter end of pregnancy), or you’re just too logical.
Anyway, among all the celebrations last week I spent every free minute playing, “Is THIS a sign of labor?”
This game, as it turns out, is not that much fun for the whole family when they’re also trying to celebrate their birthdays. And just so everyone knows, craving chocolate, frequent contractions (and urination), mood swings, and ankle swelling do not mean that labor is imminent.
Week 34 is coming to a close and obviously I’m no closer to snuggling that 6 pounds of baby. M even had the nerve to predict I would be pregnant until 40 weeks. Ack!
For the record, I know that having a baby at 34 weeks is not ideal–in fact, most doctors would consider it an emergency. But like I said, my brain is hormone riddled, and even though Sam and Ellie don’t look snuggle-able in these pictures, their brains and lungs and spines and everything have grown just fine.
And since they were twins, they only weighed about 5 pounds (each) at birth.
The doctor said she guesses this baby is already six pounds.
Six pounds? There’s six pounds of growing baby lodged between my ribs.
Or did I already mention that?
