So last weekend when M and I saw that The Muppet Movie was playing, we thought it would be a good pop-culture introduction for our family. My dad was in town, and he agreed to babysit while the rest of us headed to our local eat-dinner-while-you-watch movie theater.
Nervous that the movie would be packed, we arrived especially early. And when the ticket saleslady told us The Muppet Movie was only $5 for the five of us, we barely blinked. Yes, sheltered we are. We didn’t even flinch that our family was the only one in the theater.
Until the opening credits began. A NY skyline including the twin towers.
And the title, “MUPPETS TAKE MANHATTAN!”
M and I laughed at ourselves, at our family that can never get pop culture quite right, who had missed the news that Muppets started the following week. The kids? They sat back and enjoyed the movie…Brooke Shields cameo and all.
I told this funny story to a dear friend. She laughed so hard, and then bought us five tickets to the NEW Muppet Movie, and volunteered to babysit Nate.
Yesterday we all headed back to the theater, this time packed with other kids. We all laughed at the shenanigans of those silly Muppets and smiled and fit in just right with the pop culture, Selena Gomez cameo and all.
Until we filed out at the end.
Sam said, “Are the Muppets real?”
Elisabeth said, “I liked the other Muppet Movie better.”
And Catie said, “Which one was Selena Gomez?”
