Friday was Go Texan day around here. Because if there’s one thing the state of Texas needs, it’s a little pride. A reason to celebrate the state’s history. Clearly that’s missing since our four-year-olds know the Texas Pledge of Allegiance (after saying it EVERYDAY at their private school). And Catie is a bit sketchy on whether or not The Eyes of Texas is the National Anthem.

So, on Friday, Sam and Elisabeth had the opportunity to wear “Texan” clothes to school. They met the challenge with careful selection (Elisabeth) and hesitant enthusiasm (Sam).
Elisabeth disappeared into her closet with shouts of “I DON’T NEED HELP!” and reappeared half an hour later with, really, the best little Texan outfit I could’ve hoped for. She REFUSES to wear jeans, so the sassy leggings were as close to cute cowgirl as she gets. The authentic hat and boots complete her outfit. If only she knew how to tease her hair. She’ll learn. Every Texan with baby fine hair really needs to own a good teasing comb (present company included).
Sam has issues with dressing up. Like, really odd issues. He starts off sooo enthusiastic. “NO UNIFORM! YESSSS! I’M A COWBOY” And I’m nodding my head and cheering him on… “Yes, you are! A real cowboy. Yahhoooo!” But as soon as he puts on his outfit, he changes his mind. “I don’t want my friends to think I’ve REALLY turned into a cowboy. I’ll just wear my uniform.”
What IS this? Some kind of reality distortion field issue? Every Halloween, any shirt with a character on it, it’s the same deal: he’s afraid that the world will believe he’s morphed into the character.
If you know, please tell me. I don’t know how many times I can convince him, “no, you’re not the character. No one will believe you are.”
On second thought, never mind. If this quirk has some educational label, I don’t want to know. I’m just going to hope it passes. And one day he’ll be able to enthusiastically dress up like the rest of the world.
Or at least as enthusiastically as his twin.
