So, Sam has a tic.

Actually, I should say that Sam has HAD a tic for a few months now. I think I posted about it before, when we made the huge mistake of taking him to the eye doctor. She said, “My four-year-old did that. NEVER MENTION IT!”
But that’s hard. He does this really exaggerated blink ALL THE TIME. And he winks. Especially when he’s talking to grown-ups.
When faced with Sam’s tic, people fall into two categories: those who know a kid with a tic and those who don’t.
The Tic-Knowers also know what to do. NEVER mention it. That’s like cementing the tic into his psyche for another few years. Turns out lots of people have had a kid with this same tic. They might pull me or M aside and say…”Sam’s tic? NEVER mention it. Our kid did that and it only went away when we ignored it.”
And then there are the people who don’t know about tics. They say things to Sam like, “What? Why are you winking at me?” or “Is there something in your eye?” Or “Can you not see?” Or “Do you have a tic?” Every time this happens they unknowingly add a few months onto the life of Sam’s tic.
😉 (*wink, wink!) 😉
