This was a beautiful weekend in Houston, Texas.

I felt better than I have in a long time. The kids were anxious for an adventure. A friend invited us to the zoo.
I’ve never been to the zoo before. If I went as a kid, I was too young to remember it.
When I became an adult, I hated the idea of animals caged up, so I avoided everything zoo.
M has taken the kids several times, but I’ve managed to convince the kids I had something else to do, just so I didn’t have to see the forlorn elephants.
Until this weekend.
Watching the kids watch the animals, watching the kids dance in the sunshine, watching the kids enjoy the adventure helped me to not think about how the elephants would probably be happier back in Africa.
It was also Boo Zoo…which meant lots of kids dressed up in costumes and ran to the Trunk (ha, ha) or Treat stations throughout the zoo. Our kids joined in, jumping up and down at the prospect of free Rolly Tootsies (as Sam earnestly calls them).
Boo Zoo meant that most of Houston also had our same idea of what to do on a beautiful fall day. The place was packed.
And the elephants didn’t seem to mind a bit.
