“It is one of the blessings of old friends that you can afford to be stupid with them.”
-Ralph Waldo Emerson
A couple clarifications about this picture and quote:
1. By old friends, I mean those I’ve known for more than 20 years. I’m not calling anyone here old. Even though the two in the middle are FORTY today. Yes, like 40. Half your life is over. Not old, though. =)
2. Clearly, the “be stupid with them” part of the quote refers exclusively to friends you lived with in college. Friends who have held your hand during break-ups, your hair 20 years ago (or, more accurately, 19 years ago, Lin), and your heart when you all moved apart.
3. Everyone has those friends we’ve been thisclose with, but we don’t get to see anymore. Not that anyone is counting, but the Houston girls in this picture have visited Arizona and Nebraska NUMEROUS times. If only Houston had a convenient airport. Or beautiful weather nine months of the year. Or if half of the foursome lived here. Or if it had been five years since we were all together, then I’m sure they would come to Houston. Oh, wait…..
4. Here’s some good aging news: we look better now than we did here. Or at least we’ve all learned about Mom Pants. And are successfully avoiding them now!
5. We are still pretty old.
