biscottiThis has been one of those weird weeks where everyone in our family is dancing to their own rhythm. The kids had President’s Day off of school, and then Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday were big work days for Mike and me. As a creshendo to our weird week, the kids only had a half of a day of school today. Yay?

I’ve spent my days in my own head, writing in my pjs and eating cold bacon off the breakfast plates until way past lunchtime. But the evenings has been the complete opposite. The weird schedule has left the kids both giddy and insecure, and in need of much attention and activity.

Meanwhile, Mike and I are both in our own worlds with work. I’m writing a book proposal, which is just about as tedious and complicated as writing your own obituary. Mike is chasing projects in the volatile oil and gas industry.

So, here we are, Friday afternoon and the week has slipped away without any of us accomplishing what we wanted. The twins have a biography report due on Tuesday, and we’re hours from finishing them. Catie has six thousand summer activities she wants me to sign her up for, but I keep forgetting. Nate is feeling clingy and could use a day of nothing but reading a pile of books And did I mention this *&$% proposal is STILL not finished?

So, I prayed—which is to say I stopped trying to heal my own small mind with my own small mind and consulted Someone who might offer real help.

Prayer is always fresh air, slices of light, and clearing out of the old, musty thoughts.

Shortly after that, our beloved Aunt Katie showed up with biscotti, pictures of her new granddaughter, hugs, prayers, and an offer to take all the kids out for frozen yogurt. This. This is exactly the ending this wonky week needed. Then she took them to the park for real fresh air and sunshine.

Yes, God works through all of this, but maybe especially through the biscotti and frozen yogurt.

This little sliver of grace in an otherwise funky week has shined enough light to help me see different rhythms are okay.

Especially when they end like this.
