Letter to Catie on Your First Day of Fourth Grade

Dear Catie…
Remember how, the first time you put on this Westlake shirt, you stared at yourself in the mirror for a very long time?
If seeing yourself in the uniform usually worn by your little brother and sister was strange for you, it was, perhaps, doubly strange for me.
But you were unfazed. After a few minutes of checking yourself out, you shrugged and went on to the next thing. That is so you, Catie. You have more self-confidence than any other kid I’ve ever met. No matter what changes, bad days or disappointments come your way, you brush them off. Nothing steals your smile, kiddo. That is a gift from God.
This last year has been filled with changes. We found out so much about you and the way your brain works. All that information rocked my world. Daddy and I worried all the time that you would hate being different than the other kids. We checked with you constantly to make sure you were fine with the new classes and challenges. Kiddo, you were so okay.
In fact, Daddy and I learned an important lesson about you this past year. You love new challenges. You thrive with new challenges. We should never worry about piling too much on you because you will figure it out. Every time.
Fourth Grade at Westlake will also have its own challenges. Daddy and I will do our best to trust you and trust God. After this past (hard) year, our instinct will be to hold your hand and smother you with well-intended help.
You so don’t need it, Catie. You are a smart, confident girl, who feels Jesus is right by her side.  With that, nothing can stop you.
Nothing will stop you. Bring it on, Fourth Grade!
I love you.
Mommy
